This test gives us an understanding of the size of total thoracic space it measures the air space thus liquids in the chest decrease the air space.

Pleural effusions, small chest, atelectasis, loculated blebs, deformed chest, poorly functioning diaphragmatic muscles all contribute to smaller lung volume.

Where as emphysema, hyperinflation increase the lung volume.

This test helps in getting an idea where the problem is if someone is short of breath. Are these small lungs , big lungs.

The testing is done by blowing air and sitting in the box which measures your body and the air volume inside.
