                                             Proton pump inhibitors

Author: Ramesh Kaul, MD

Proton-pump inhibitors are the effective drugs for suppressing gastric acid production.

They are used to treat the same conditions as histamine type-2 receptor antagonists, they differ from the latter drugs in how they inhibit acid production, and in how they should be given. Initial concerns over potential ill effects of hypergastrinemia due to long-term acid suppression with proton-pump inhibitors have to be discussed.

Proton-pump inhibitors are presently dispensed and prescribed all over the world. The knee jerk response by any physician to acid reflux in esophagus, or stomach burns with or without ulcers; use for prophylaxis in stress like Intensive care units is to prescribe a Proton-pump inhibitor.

I was watching my thoracic surgeon do an EGD and showed me multiple gastric polyps and suggested that these are common with the use of  Proton-pump inhibitors.

This made me write this editorial.  The interesting sites I looked at are
